If you want to go somewhere tropical but you don't want to deal with huge crowds, you might consider a vacation to Barbados. The West Indian island country is outside Saint Lucia and Trinidad and Tobago, and it attracts everyone from honeymooners to celebrities. You can enjoy quiet luxury and time to relax, or you can have daring adventures hiking the trails or diving among the reefs.
You can really feel like you are getting away from it all when you visit this tropical island.
There is one airport in operation in the southwestern part of Barbados: The Grantley Adams International Airport (airport code BGI) in Bridgetown.
A smaller airfield, the Bridgetown Heliport, used to be in operation, but it has since closed.
Though you might think that having access to only one airport limits your transportation options, it doesn't. The country is only 21 miles long and 14 miles wide, and you can easily get around with taxis, ZR vans, public busses, or a car rental.
A flight from YYZ in Toronto to BGI takes about 5 hours and 30 minutes. By taking a charter jet, you can enjoy a comfortable flight that allows you to relax and really get into the spirit of your vacation. In contrast, a commercial flight will have you feeling cramped and tense, which is no way to start your vacation in paradise!
Though there is plenty to see and do in Barbados, a few things have emerged as "musts."
If you rent a car, plan to take a drive from the tip of the island down the east coast. You'll see some amazing views and find plenty of interesting stops along the way.
If you like snorkeling and diving, head to the west coast for Folkstone and Post St. Charles. If surfing and boogie boarding are more your thing, head to the south for Miami and Dover beaches.
Hit up the Wildlife Reserve and Harrisons Caves to explore nature, and go to Oistons and the Cheapside Market for great food and shopping.
