Amazing New Aerial Photography From a Private Jet! Here’s What You Need to Know

There’s no doubt that the view from any of the flight private jets is spectacular. It makes sense that you would want to capture those sights and keep them as reminders of your trip. Fortunately, the approaches to aerial photography are more advanced today than at any time in the past. Here are some tips that will help you make the most of your efforts while you enjoy the ride.

Tripods are Not Essential

Whether you are strictly an amateur or have all the equipment that a professional would use, the approaches that work well on the ground do not necessarily work as well when you are in the air. For example, that tripod that makes it so much easier to set up a shot won’t be much help on a private jet. You will need to learn a little more about how to hold the camera and adjust your stance.

Rest the lens barrel against your palm. If you are left handed, use the right palm as a rest. Use the opposing hand to hold the camera body. Make sure your finger is on the shutter release. Keeping the elbows at your sides will make it easier to steady the camera and prepare for a shot. Keep your finger on the shutter so you can depress rather than have to align your finger repeatedly. This makes it easier to capture a series of clear shots.

You Need the Right Lighting

If you happen to be on one of the private flights from Baltimore in the early morning or the late afternoon, the lighting will be just right. When you are in the air during the middle of the day, the lighting may or may not be right for a particular shot.

The layout of the jet makes a difference. An open design that includes light coming in from the cockpit coupled with plenty of light from the passenger windows might be enough. Remember that back lighting may help in some cases. At other times, lower light might give the shot more of a dreamlike sense that looks great. 

Include the Clouds 

Part of what makes aerial photography so exciting is being able to see the ground from a different perspective. That perspective is heightened when there are also wisps of clouds captured in the shots. They provide a detail that provides a better idea of the height from the ground. Shoot tight if there are not a lot of clouds, and make sure you capture at least the edges in your shots. Go broad if you have plenty of them and they happen to be in interesting shapes. You’re shots will be fantastic. 

While it may take a little trial and error, you will get the hang of taking shots from a private jet. Start out with simple shots and move on to some that may seem more complicated. Before you know it, quite a few of those shots will be more than memories of a trip. They will be artwork that you want to display in your home.
